Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion

OVERVIEW

Microdermabrasion is used as a light surface treatment that refreshes the skin and reduces fine lines. It is often used to reduce the appearance of crow's feet, age spots and acne scars. It also has the added advantage of stimulating natural growth of new skin cells and collagen.

Procedure
Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical technique that is conducted in the physician's office without anesthesia. A hand-held device containing tiny crystals is moved against the skin, causing a polishing effect. The treatment generally lasts 30 minutes to 1 hour. Patients return immediately to work. Generally, multiple treatments take place over a 2-to-3-week timespan in order to achieve the desired results. To maintain the effect, patients will likely need to undergo periodic re-treatment.

Recovery
Because microdermabrasion is a surface treatment, it has few to no side effects. Patients with sensitive skin may experience some pinkness or redness, which dissipates in days. Microdermabrasion can be used for patients with any skin tone and for individuals with sensitive skin. It is important to maintain good quality, ongoing skin care to retain the best results over time.
